Member Transformation: Guy
Ladies and gentleman I present to you our newest member spotlight : Mr. Guy Spiller !!!!!!!!
1. Just a little bit about yourself. Where you are from, lived, family, pets, occupation, etc.
Born in Texas, lived in Louisiana a couple of years, and have been in Richmond since 1964. I have a couple of German Shepherds to keep me company. My dad was in the television and radio broadcasting business, and I have done that my entire career as well. I owned a television studio here for many years that produced a lot of commercials, and I also was a partner in a radio station here in the early ’90s.
For most of the ’70s, in addition to my work in television, I was a part time disc jockey on WLEE…the big AM Top 40 station in Richmond. I worked a lot of weekends there and had a lot of fun.
2. Any background in athletics or sports prior to coming to Pushin W8?
The closest I have ever been to athletics or sports…is on the crew televising them. I’ve never been into sports or any sort of fitness routine….at least, until the last 18 months.
3. How did you learn about Pushin W8 and what was it like when you first came in?
I had a physical a couple of years ago and got a wake-up call from the doctor that one of the tests indicated that…if I continued as I had been, that I was in danger of contracting diabetes. That woke me up, and I started researching healthier diets, and ways to get in better shape. I had been a member of a couple of health clubs in the past, but I didn’t attend them very regularly and didn’t really exert myself when I did go. In my research, I ran across Crossfit, and the more I learned about it, the more I thought that might just be what I needed. I had never been pushed, or even pushed myself in fitness activities, so I figured this might be worth a try. I called the Crossfit over on 360, and was invited to come watch a class, which I did. I also realized, that as good an idea as this sounded, it was quite a drive from my house, and, knowing myself, I would easily find excuses not to go regularly. I gave up that idea quickly, and concentrated on diet for a while. Then somehow while surfing the net, I ran across the CFPW8 website and saw that it was much closer…just through the woods from my house. I emailed through the site and asked about it, but…I never got an email back. I think I finally just came over one day and met Tyler…..and the rest is history.
4.What has been your proudest accomplishment at the gym?
My proudest…and most surprising accomplishment so far, is that I have stuck with it. I have a tendency to get gung ho about things for a short period of time, and then give them up. I’ve been coming here long enough now, that I can actually see the effects on my body. I’ve never stuck with any exercise routine long enough before, to ever see or feel any effect. That has turned out to be a powerful motivator. I also have learned, that no matter how easy it would be on any given day to find some excuse to miss a class…that if I go, I know that I will feel a whole lot better than if I didn’t go. That’s almost instant gratification!
5. Goals that you are working on?
Goals are not something I can consciously set….since I have no previous experience in knowing what I could be capable of doing. That’s one thing about never having done this sort of thing before…I’m not worrying myself about not being able to do things as well at my age as I could at 25. I totally believe that I can do things now that I could not do at all when I was 25! I’m sure I can run more now and lift heavier stuff than ever.
I do know that at some point, I would like to be able to do a strict pull up without bands, and I would really like to someday be able to do a handstand push up.
6. What is it that you love the most about being at Pushin W8?
I feel safe there…and, although I am actually quite the loner, I really enjoy all the people in my classes, and of course, Tyler and all the coaches. It’s as close to feeling like a part of a team and family that I have ever had, and seeing others achieve their goals is very satisfying.
Well we at Pushin Weight could not be more proud of the hard work and dedication you have put in to leading a healthy lifestyle Guy! You are such an asset to our family !
